Based in Scotland, we were set up 10 years ago to create a direct mechanism for disabled people to feed in to, and connect with, the newly formed Scottish Parliament. While policy work has remained our primary focus, we also campaign on a diverse range of Disability Equality issues, as well as running a development programme for DPOs across Scotland, read more about Inclusion Scotland on our website; www.inclusionscotland.org

What is the Development Project?

Inclusion Scotland’s main funders, (Scottish Government equalities Unit), provided us with funding last year to carry out a piece of capacity building work with DPOs. The aim of this work was to assist grass routes disabled Person’s organisations, (both new and existing groups), with every thing they need to get started, and/or, to progress their group to the next level of growth and development. This work could take the form of tailored support for leaders/boards of directors, help with funding applications, writing a constitution, sourcing and maintaining membership and lots more!
Currently, we are supporting 5 groups across Scotland with capacity building, and plan to work with at least 6 more during the course of the year. We can also help with sign posting and general information services, while we have a range of partnership organisations who work closely with us to support DPOs through the development process.
Another key outcome of this work, is to produce a toolkit, which will act as a one stop shop providing groups with all the basic info they need to get themselves up and running. This new online blog aims to complement the toolkit, while also gathering materials and personal experiences which may go on to make up portions of its content. We also hope that the blog will act as a powerful conduit which will bring DPOs together, and create a platform through which they can share learning, hints, tips and personal experiences of the disability movement at large. The blog shall comprise of content drawn directly from disabled people and their organisations; don’t worry if you are new to the movement, our intention is to build a resource which will contain something for every one.

Finally, do remember that this is your blog! This site will only succeed if you inform its content, respond to member questions and give us regular feedback on how we can continue to improve this resource. If you have material that you would like to be uploaded to the blog, please Email it to; Ruth Forrest; ruthf@inclusionscotland.org where possible, do send pictures, film or audio clips to accompany your articles as this adds colour to the blog; we don’t want it to be too print heavy! In addition, each article contains a section where comments may be logged; feel free to use this to discuss and debate the content as it continues to grow.

On behalf of all at Inclusion Scotland, we hope you like this blog, and look forward to getting to know many more of you as you start to join us in building this site.

With warm regards,

Ruth Forrest, outreach and development Officer (Inclusion Scotland).
